Have you ever wondered?
We all have seen gorgeous lawns, such as the one pictured below, but have you ever wondered how they manage to make their lawn look luscious, fresh, and green? The answer is lawn stripping. The "stripes" that you see on a lawn or athletic field are caused by light reflecting off the blades of grass. It has not been cut at a different height nor is it a different breed of grass. The stripped appearance is created by bending the blades of grass in different directions. To explain in further detail, the direction that the grass is bent determines the "light" or "dark" coloring of the stripe. When the blends of grass are bent away from you, the grass appears lighter because the light is reflecting off the wide, lengthy portion of the blade. When the blades of grass are bent towards you, the grass appears darker as a result of looking at the tips of the blades and the shadows under the grass. Therefore, cutting a lawn in an opposing pattern (up/down, north/south, or east/west) results in the contrasting stripe effect.
